Hey, kids! What time is it? YAY! It's Jewel Shepard time! Okay, so I'm watching too many "Howdy Doody" reruns. What can I say? I'm a network rerun junkie. Anyhow, I just want to say "hi" to all those that have written me and apologize for my tardiness in writing back. There's no excuse. (But, I'll try one anyhow...I've been busy.)
Welcome to the very first Jewel Shepard Fan Club Newsletter! Neat! You're probably saying, "Yo, Jewel, growing old waiting for it." And you're right. I just had a birthday on January third and I feel older. But I guess that's what birthdays do...make you older. What happened to those days of Disco and bad suits? Hey, but that's another story. Back to the Newsletter, I should probably update you on what's happening in my life, huh? Okay, here goes... For those of you who have read Invasion of the B-Girls, I want to say thanks for buying and thanks for writing me. Some of you have written some very interesting comments. I'll answer some of those, later in this Newsletter. Invasion of the B-Girls has been bought by the Dick Clark Film Group (yeah, the same man from American Bandstand, only he has a picture that's growing old in his closet) for a T.V. series and possible Motion Picture. Thom Eberhart has been signed to do the series (Thom, for those of you not informed, wrote "Honey, I Blew Up The Kid," "Captain Ron" and many others too numerous for me to remember). As far as the feature, we're talking with a writer now so I can't tell you who yet. I figure, tune into your T.V. sets a year from now and possibly you'll be able to catch The B-Girls. Okay, that's it for chit-chat, now on to business... Did you know I was on Joan Rivers' TV show? Well, I was and so were some of my friends...all part of the publicity campaign around my book. I took Kelli Maroney, Roseanne Katon and Becky Le Beau with me to New York and it was a blast! We were the B-Movie Babes! Kelli talked about her nightmare of ending up as the world's oldest cheerleader with an Uzi. Joan got a big kick out of that. Roseanne talked about being hired for a pirate movie, where she brought machine guns and the extras brought swords. So guess who won? Hey...it was low-budget film making at its best. Then there was Becky in her little string bikini, telling everyone how she washes cars, without the use of her hands. Joan wanted to know if we were ever chased by giant cantaloupes. So, we giggled a lot and had a fun hour. I hope you caught it. While I was in New York, I visited some friends of mine and basically got caught up on my Subway letters. I was sitting on the A-train, going to Brooklyn and I wondered why they didn't have an "I" train? It's one of those little things I've always wondered about. Also, Entertainment Tonight covered "The B-Girls" for their "Inside Story" section. There I was again with fellow B-Girls, Linnea Quigley, Monique Gabrielle, Yvette Vickers and once more with Becky Le Beau. ET claimed that we will never be at the Academy Awards. I think they were wrong. I was there last year in the second row ('course, I didn't win anything...probably because they didn't have a category such as, "Best Performance by a Starlet in a Hot Tub." Maybe they don't understand the subtle dramatic skils involved in B-Movies, being able to emote while mowing down small armies and wearing a wet t-shirt. I think we should start a write-in campaign. Or maybe I can go on Larry King and announce my candidacy on his show. Hey, it worked for Ross Perot and I'm far prettier than Mr. Perot. And, in the last election, I spent sixty-five million dollars less than he did and carried just as many states! So you get the idea that I tend to ramble a lot?) Then there was Hard Copy. They sent a film crew to cover the photography of my book cover and interviewed all the ladies. Monique won the best animal sound but, when they asked Becky to scream, she just did a lot of oohing and ahhing and shoving her chest forward. For some reason, the crew didn't mind. Linnea listed all the many ways she's been killed in movies (it was a very long list) and Kelli told about being wasted by a comet in her classic, "Night of the Comet." Brinke Stevens discussed making the not-so-common transition from Marine Biologist to Scream Queen and I went Hollywood, wearing shades, trying to be cool. We were an interesting bunch, to say the least. The Playboy Channel came to the signing of my book at the Golden Apple Comic Shop on Melrose in Hollywood. Michelle Bauer joined Becky, Linnea, Monique and myself and the crowd lined up hours ahead to meet their favorite ladies. Even comedian Gilbert Gottfried showed up to comment on the event. All in all, I would say it was a success... One of my favorite interviews was with HBO News. I wore a red bathing suit, high heels and lounged by the pool, letting the camera crew eavesdrop on my writing techniques with the portable computer and cellular phone. (Isn't that how Neil Simon writes?) I'd have to say that was probably one of their more colorful interviews. Here in the Newsletter, I'll be telling you what I'm up to and answering the most-asked questions. Like, this month, everyone seems to be asking me what my least favorite moment was of last year. Well, that's easy. Recently, here in Los Angeles, we had some terrible weather: High winds, rain, small surf (I love to surf). Anyhow, there used to be this palm tree on my block. Just one. And, one of our windier nights, it fell. Guess where. That's right: On my car! I cried. Gone is my Oldsmobile...Hello, Ford Explorer! So I would say there is a happy ending to my lowest moment. The best place I visited in '92 was Aurora, Illinois. "What? Aurora? you ask. Not Maui or Paris? Hey, it could change next month. But right now, its Aurora. I was back there with my friend Felicia Michaels. (She's a comedienne and "Star Search" winner, featured in a Playboy pictorial a few months ago.) One day, she and I decided that, since we were in Aurora, we'd go look for the garage where Wayne and Garth of "Wayne's World" did their cable show. We knocked on doors but to no avail. Everyone kept saying Wayne and Garth's studio was located in Hollywood. But the movie said they were in Aurora! Did the movie lie? This is how the Newsletter is going to work. We're going to charge five dollars for four issues which, believe me, barely covers the cost to print and mail the thing. This first one is on me. I'll try to get it out quarterly, updating you on the important(and not so important) things that happen in my life...and there'll probably be a lot of me talking about silly stuff of absolutely no importance, information on appearances, updates and answers to some of your questions. For those of you who want photos...see page four. And do let me know what else you'd like to see on that page. Up and coming products...Dave Stevens, master comic book artist and creator of "The Rocketeer" has sculpted his first Dream Queen Vinyl Kit. Guess who the first Dream Queen is? That's right! You'll have an opportunity to put me together and paint me in whatever style you would like. For instance, even though I have Auburn hair, if you want me to be a blonde...Zappo! I'm a blonde! (Numbers not included) Coming to you through Dark Horse Comics and hobby stores alike. I hope to have some for sale in our next Newsletter. This will be a lot more fun than assembling a model of a '57 Buick. Also, another fine artist, Kent Steine, has done a glamourous portrait of me, signed by both of us and available from Stabur Graphics. I hope to have some of them by the next Newsletter, also, and will personalize your autograph. A cameraman friend of mine is getting ready to lens (that's Hollywood talk) a video of a day in the life of Jewel. It's going to be very sexy and probably a little silly, as well. Tales from the Crypt Book Shop in Kansas City is sponsoring a Fangoria Convention on March 13 and I'll be there! If you live nearby, come say hi. If not, join me here next Newsletter! Bye!
